SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE HISTORY OF IL CASATO
The farmhouse Il Casato was built at the beginning of the 18th century, commissioned by the noble Siennese family named Borghesi, which owned most of the land around the village of Monticchiello.
Nowadays the house lies in the heart of a very relevant territory from both an historical and archaeological point of view.
On the premises one can find an Etruscan necropolis and the ancient templar “Pieve di S.Maria dello Spino”, an old country church completely restored by the Gonzi family.
Right by the house passed the medieval Via Francigena, called “Via Barlettaia”, as the old carriages (called “barlette” in Italian), carrying water and wine travelled over this road.
4 km. north of the house lies the medieval citadel of Monticchiello, an important bastion protecting the Republic of Siena.
Every summer it houses the “Teatro Povero”, a very old form of theatre which is strictly linked to the life and history of the local community.
